As event professionals, we’re always looking for destinations that check all the boxes: convenience, experience, and increasingly, sustainability. That’s why more planners are choosing Indianapolis — a city that combines smart infrastructure, community support, and a commitment to helping groups plan sustainable experiences and events.
When it comes to sustainability, many think of recycling, composting, and reusable items. Since 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, (or SDG’s), created and implemented by the United Nations, have provided guidance when it comes to addressing an array of global challenges and opportunities. These goals help planners align the mission of their own organizations with the impact their event may have on the cities in which they take place.
Walkability = Sustainable Convenience
Many planners already know that Indianapolis offers one of the most walkable downtowns in the country — but that’s more than just a perk, it’s a planet-friendly planning advantage.
With more than 7,100 hotel rooms and 250,000 square feet of meeting space connected to the Indiana Convention Center via skywalks, plus dozens more hotels and restaurants within a short walking distance, attendees can get from their rooms to sessions, restaurants, and attractions without ever needing a shuttle or rideshare. Overall, fewer vehicles for attendees and group transport = lower emissions, and a sustainable event choice, just by hosting an event in Indy!
Speaking of walking, make sure to check out the Indianapolis Cultural Trail while your event is in town. This not-for-profit organization offers over 10 miles of linear park experience that inspires and sustains connections and cultural experiences that are accessible to all. More Sustainable Touchpoints for Planners
Indianapolis offers a number of built-in advantages for planners with sustainability goals:
- Green venues: Many event spaces, including the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium, offer recycling, composting, and energy-efficient systems. Check out the sustainable initiatives at these venues and get inspired about how to utilize and promote these offerings at your own events through signage and exhibitor awareness. Looking for a unique offsite location to add a sustainable experience to your agenda? Check out Visit Indy Partners Trader’s Point Creamery or The Rejoicing Vine, (to name just a few!).
- Local sourcing and Support: Caterers and restaurants are ready to build seasonal, Indiana-grown menus that cut down on transportation emissions and support local growers. For example, Visit Indy partner, Kahn’s Catering has their own, chemical-free garden where they source edible flowers and fresh herbs.
- Food Donations: Support the local community by donating surplus food to Second Helpings, a nonprofit organization that transforms rescued food into nutritious meals for those in need. The organization works closely with caterers, venues, and event planners to ensure safe and efficient food recovery, aligning your event with sustainable and socially responsible practices. To contribute, simply connect with Second Helpings and your event venue ahead of your event to arrange pickup and donation details.
- Air Travel: Have we mentioned that Indianapolis International Airport was the first U.S. airport to receive LEED certification for their entire terminal campus? They host the world’s largest airport-based solar farm, operate on of the largest electric airport shuttle bus fleet in the U.S., and partner with the White Lick Beekeepers Association to offer 4.7 acres of airport land to support a community bee apiary. Just by traveling through IND, your attendees are helping support these incredible initiatives – bravo!
April is National Volunteer Month — Celebrate the Power of Hoosier Hospitality
- Volunteers are the heartbeat of successful events in Indianapolis. From helping guests properly sort waste at recycling and compost stations to supporting reusable service ware programs or water refill stations, volunteers are often the frontline of a greener guest experience. Their presence has the opportunity to reduce the need for additional staff and resources, which can help minimize the environmental footprint of an event. Additionally, local volunteers bring valuable community knowledge and a personal investment in the event’s success, fostering a culture of stewardship that aligns with broader sustainability goals. By empowering volunteers with sustainability-focused roles and training, event organizers can significantly boost their environmental impact while deepening community engagement.
- During National Volunteer Month, we’re proud to recognize the thousands of individuals who show up with a smile and a willingness to help — making large-scale events possible and embodying the Hoosier Hospitality we’re known for. Looking for a place for YOUR group to volunteer or support? Consider non-profit organizations like Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Teacher’s Treasures, or Hope Center Indy.
