Introducing Winterlights at Newfields

From Christmas at the Zoo to Circle of Lights on Monument Circle, Indianapolis always offers plenty of dazzling light displays to enjoy during the holiday season.

This being said, there is a brand new display coming to Indy this winter.

From Nov. 19-Jan. 7, Winterlights will illuminate Newfields — a new name for the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s campus. Visitors will be treated to a uniquely curated display unlike any they’ve seen in Indy before, as more than one million lights adorn the lush garden grounds. While enjoying the scent of evergreens and campfires, visitors will also be able to purchase seasonal food and drink, including hot chocolate and cider (adults can ask for the spiked variety) as well as a special Newfields beer from Taxman Brewing Company and s’mores provided by local Girl Scouts.

“We are so excited to welcome everyone to Winterlights,” said Jonathan Wright, The Ruth Lilly Deputy Director for Horticulture and Natural Resources. “After traveling the world to see the best of the best, we’ve reimagined and expanded our annual celebration of the season into a spectacular and glowing tribute to The Garden and, especially, our towering, historic trees. There’s never been anything like this in Indiana before.”

Winterlights will continue some of the Newfields’ most beloved holiday traditions. At its heart will be the historic Lilly House, filled with sparkling decorations and beautiful floral displays that continue the Christmas at Lilly House tradition started in 1971. Karl Unnasch’s whimsical 50-foot-tall tree of toys, Playtime in Indy, returns in a brand new location surrounded by giant Whimsy Trees, perfect for a family photo. Every Tuesday in December, Santa Claus will join in the fun with a special appearance.
