With an unseasonably warm February, I’ve been so thankful to already be logging outdoor miles before my usual springtime running routine. My eight year old daughter, Zoe, is my very own personal trainer. Last year, we began running 5Ks together. I had no idea what kind of hops this 40-pound person had in her, but let’s just say she’s bound to be a distance runner and clocks a pace around 10 minutes per mile. Not too shabby for the third grade.
Together, we’ve set the goal of running one 5K per month. It’s a fun way for us to connect and make sure that we log our training miles during the week. It’s very easy to find one 5K per month in the Indianapolis area. In fact, it’s not unusual that we find more than we can afford to run. Here are five great races coming up this spring to help you work on your fitness while having a great time!
Shamrock Run
Celebrate all of the green things with this festive, fun annual race in downtown Indy! On Saturday March 18, may the luck of the Irish be on your side as you begin your trek at 10 AM. Wear your green and get your run on in this nearly 4 mile run.
D.IN.O. Trail Run Series
There’s nothing better than running through the great outdoors! If you love a good trail run, don’t miss the D.IN.O. (Do Indiana Off-Road) series. On Saturday, April 1, you can wind your way through Indianapolis’ own beautiful Eagle Creek Park. Choose from a 5K, 15K, or even a FREE kids’ run!
Easter Egg 5K & Adult Easter Egg Hunt
Who says Easter Egg Hunts are just for the kids? Check out the Easter Egg 5K and Adult Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 15. The event is sponsored by Tow Yard Brewing in downtown Indianapolis. Participants 21 and older will receive a free pint when they cross the finish line!
Earth Day 5K
Show some love for the planet and get a great workout in, too. I love the creativity of the Earth Day Indiana 5K and 1 Mile Walk. From recycled medals to unused bibs from previous races, the emphasis is on making the most of what we’ve got while taking care of the Earth, our bodies, and each other. On Saturday, April 22, make your way along the downtown Urban Wilderness Trail! Enjoy the Earth Day Indiana Festival in Military Park after you’ve finished your race.
One America Mini Marathon
If I were to choose one Indianapolis race for you to run ever, it would be the One America 500 Festival Mini Marathon. With a route tracing that runs right around the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, it’s a run you won’t soon forget. The festive trek is lined with bands, cheering crowds, and even the Indianapolis 500 Princess Court! If you’re not up for the full 13.1 miles, sign up for the Finish Line 500 5K. Both events are held this year on May 6.
Hit the pavement and get fit while you’re having fun at these Indy races this spring! There will be even more to come during the summer months. We can’t wait to run this city. Come and join us.
