Last updated: October 2025 Downtown Indianapolis is growing—and fast. From new hotels and expanded infrastructure to refreshed public spaces, the city is transforming in big ways. Here’s a closer look at what’s underway, why it matters, and how you can navigate the changes.

Over the next five years, downtown Indianapolis will transform with upgraded facilities for hosting world-class events. Major projects affecting downtown Indianapolis include:

Signia by Hilton

The 143,500-square-foot Indiana Convention Center expansion will connect to a new 800-room Signia by Hilton.

Traction Yards Development

Hendricks Commercial Properties LLC is renovating Circle Centre Mall into mixed-use development with an open-air promenade, called Traction Yards.

Georgia Street

Georgia Street is being redesigned to be more pedestrian and event friendly along the west block.

Gainbridge-Adjacent Hotel

A new hotel, opening near Gainbridge Fieldhouse, will feature a venue, restaurant, and retail.

Timeline & Phases

Q4 2025
  • Construction on the Signia by Hilton and the Indiana Convention Center Expansion is underway, with approximately 38 stories in the air as of October 2025.
    • Capitol Avenue will be closed for vehicular traffic beginning October 27, and will remain closed through March 2026.
    • Illinois Street will be closed from South Street to Georgia Street
  • Georgia Street between Capitol Ave. and Illinois Street is currently closed for vehicular traffic and pedestrian traffic.
  • During Q4 2025, the skywalk connecting Omni Severin Hotel to Circle Centre Mall will be removed, with further road closures on Georgia Street between Illinois and Meridian Streets. The southern block of Circle Centre Mall will begin its major renovation.
    • The parking garages will not be affected.
    • Street-level businesses along Meridian Street will not be affected.
    • Tenants impacted by the construction on the south block have already relocated.
    • The skywalk between the mall and the World of Wonders Parking Garage will be temporarily closed.
Q1 2026 & Beyond
  • Signia by Hilton and the Indiana Convention Center Expansion is scheduled to be completed by Q4 2026. Updates to road closures and available downtown amenities will become apparent as the project progresses.
  • Georgia Street is scheduled to be fully redeveloped by Spring 2026.
  • The current phase of the renovation of the Circle Centre Mall - featuring the southern end of the existing mall's footprint - is scheduled to be completed by 2030.
  • Work on the Union Station underpasses will be completed by Spring 2026.

Which street-level businesses will remain open during the Circle Centre Mall construction?

All businesses on Meridian Street will remain open throughout the Circle Centre Mall renovation/Traction Yards development. Businesses that will be affected on Illinois street have already been relocated to temporary addresses during this phase of construction.

Will the Food Court in the Circle Centre Mall be open during construction?

During the current phase of construction on the southern end of Circle Centre Mall, the food court in the northern end of the mall (off Washington Street) will remain open.

What skywalks to the Indiana Convention Center will be affected during construction of Traction Yards and the Signia by Hilton?

Indianapolis' skywalks are one of the defining features of the city's convention package. Because of these, developers have vowed to keep as many skywalks open as possible during construction. Beginning in Q2 2025, the skywalk between the Circle Centre Mall and the World of Wonders parking garage, as well as the skywalk between the north side and south side of the mall, has been temporarily closed.

The skywalk between Omni Severin Hotel and Circle Centre Mall is permanently closed as of Q2 2025.

How will downtown parking be affecting during the construction projects?

While street parking may be limited due to tangential road closures, downtown parking garages will not be affected during the current phases of the construction projects in downtown Indianapolis. The Circle Centre Mall's parking garages will remain open (though the skywalk between the World of Wonders garage and the Circle Centre Mall will be temporarily closed).
