A blockbuster event returns to the Canal this summer. For the second year in a row, Downtown Indy, Inc. and Indy Film Fest have partnered to present “Sunset Cinema on the Canal.” Once a month, from May to August, there will be a free movie screening on the north end of the Canal.
“After a great first year, we wanted to bring back another in-Canal experience,” said Bob Schultz, senior vice president of marketing, communication, and events for Downtown Indy, Inc. “Thanks to Indy Film Fest, we know this will be a unique event and fun for all attendees.”
Each movie will be held on a Thursday and will start around 9:15 pm. Screenings may be subject to severe weather, but the current schedule is as follows:
- May 16: Grease (PG-13)
- June 20: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (PG)
- July 18: Splash (PG)
- August 22: Days of Thunder (PG-13)
A large movie screen will be set up near the Admiral Spruance Basin on 11th Street. Movie-goers are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs and set up (for free) on the grassy areas surrounding the basin. While attendees are welcome to bring their own picnic, Thomas Caterers will also have food and soft drinks available for purchase near Canal 337. Because refreshments are only available from 7:30 - 9 pm, you’ll want to grab something before the movie starts at dusk.
In the mood to make a splash? Innertubes have been provided by 9 on Canal Apartments. Those who are at least 21 years old can watch a movie in the water, adult beverage in hand. Since opportunities to get in the Canal are few and far between, the $20 price tag for an innertube and two Sun King beers seems like a steal. (Plus, you get to keep the innertube.) But because the inflatable rings are limited, in-water attendees must pre-register.
All proceeds from “Sunset Cinema on the Canal” will go to Indy Film Fest’s mission of creating a shared experience around film, as well as downtown beautification and décor.
