Building Indy’s Future: What’s Happening and What It Means

Downtown Indianapolis is growing—and fast. From new hotels and expanded infrastructure to refreshed public spaces, the city is transforming in big ways. Here’s a closer look at what’s underway, why it matters, and how you can navigate the changes.

What’s Coming to Indy

Over the next five years, downtown Indianapolis will transform with upgraded facilities for hosting world-class events. Major projects affecting downtown Indianapolis include:

Circle Centre Mall Renovation

Hendricks Commercial Properties LLC is renovating Circle Centre Mall into mixed-use development with an open-air promenade.

Shinola Hotel

Shinola Hotel, opening near Gainbridge Fieldhouse, will feature a venue, restaurant, and retail.

Timelines & Phases

Q2 2025

  • Construction on the Signia by Hilton and the Indiana Convention Center Expansion is underway, with approximately 20 floors of the 38-floor hotel in the air as of April 2025. Capitol Avenue is down to two lanes of traffic to allow for construction crews entering and exiting the site.
    • Illinois Street will be closed from South Street to Georgia Street
  • Georgia Street between Capitol Ave. and Illinois Street is currently closed for vehicular traffic, allowing pedestrian traffic on the northern side of the road. 
  • During Q2 2025, the skywalk connecting Omni Severin Hotel to Circle Centre Mall will be removed, with further road closures on Georgia Street between Illinois and Meridian Streets. The southern block of Circle Centre Mall will begin its major renovation.
    • The parking garages will not be affected.
    • Street-level businesses along Meridian Street will not be affected.
    • Tenants impacted by the construction on the south block have already relocated.
    • The skywalk between the mall and the World of Wonders Parking Garage will be temporarily closed. 
  • Work on the Union Station underpasses on Capitol Avenue, Illinois Street, and Meridian Street will begin in May or June of 2025.

Q3 2025 and Beyond

  • Signia by Hilton and the Indiana Convention Center Expansion is scheduled to be completed by Q4 2026. Updates to road closures and available downtown amenities will become apparent as the project progresses. 
  • Georgia Street is scheduled to be fully redeveloped by Spring 2026. 
  • The current phase of the renovation of the Circle Centre Mall - featuring the southern end of the existing mall's footprint - is scheduled to be completed by 2030. 
  • Work on the Union Station underpasses will be completed by Spring 2026.
