Overview
The Circle City Classic® Celebration is more than a football game—it's a cornerstone event that embodies the mission of Indiana Black Expo (IBE) to empower and uplift communities across Indiana. Since its founding in 1984, the Classic has evolved into a powerful showcase of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), academic achievement, culture, and community pride.
This year's games pits the Miles College Golden Bears against the Morgan State University Bears.
Each year, nearly 100,000 spectators gather in downtown Indianapolis for a week of impactful and inspiring events. At the heart of the celebration is the HBCU football matchup, held at Lucas Oil Stadium, which features not only fierce on-field rivalries but also the iconic pageantry of halftime shows and marching bands that energize fans and alumni from across the country.
Beyond the game, Circle City Classic® reflects IBE’s long-standing commitment to education, leadership development, and economic mobility. Through programming focused on students and young professionals, the Classic provides meaningful access to career opportunities, college pathways, and personal development resources. Initiatives such as Talent Day and Education Day create bridges between young people and future employers or educational institutions, reinforcing the event’s impact far beyond the stadium.
Since 1986, the Miss Circle City Classic® Coronation has empowered high school students through leadership training and personal development, celebrating their accomplishments and awarding scholarships—not based on beauty or talent, but on character, academic achievement, and community involvement.
Similarly, the Major Taylor Award—established in 1987—has honored individuals whose lives and careers inspire the next generation, with past honorees including legends like Muhammad Ali, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Coach Tony Dungy, and Tamika Catchings.
Over the last four decades, Circle City Classic® has contributed more than $340 million to the Indianapolis economy and enabled over $5 million in scholarships for students pursuing higher education across the country. With its rich tradition, lasting social impact, and continued focus on the future, Circle City Classic® remains one of the most significant cultural celebrations in the Midwest—and a proud reflection of Black excellence.
