Overview
Greenwood-area residents can start their Freedom Festival weekend with a free patriotic concert at the Greenwood Amphitheater.
The Greater Greenwood Community Band will present “To Serve and to Honor: A Celebration of Hope and Valor.” The approximately 75-minute outdoor concert takes place on the evening before the City of Greenwood’s Saturday Freedom Festival and offers families an additional opportunity to enjoy live music, community spirit, and a celebration of service and sacrifice.
Admission is free. No tickets are required. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Coolers are permitted.
More than 100 musicians and singers are expected to perform under the direction of guest conductor Dr. Jon Noworyta, Director of Bands at the University of Indianapolis. The Greater Greenwood Community Band will be joined by the Castlewood Singers. (https://castlewoodsingers.org/)
The program will feature traditional patriotic favorites and American music honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary. Selections will include “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” “America the Beautiful,” “Armed Forces Salute,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “National Emblem,” “Americans We,” excerpts from “Appalachian Spring,” “The Blue and the Gray,” and “Transcendent Journey.”
The Greenwood and New Whiteland Color Guard will formally present the colors during the program. Audience members will be invited to stand for the National Anthem and are welcome to sing along with familiar selections. Veterans and active-duty military personnel will be recognized during “Armed Forces Salute” as the anthem of each military branch is performed. First responders and public servants will also be formally honored.
“In a concert of all American music, the Greater Greenwood Community Band honors 250 years of the United States of America, with an emphasis on the word 'united'. Our country is built of communities of good neighbors. The forces that seek to divide us are only successful when we forget that we have more in common with our neighbors, than not. We show this through our music – the wonderful art that speaks for us, inspires us, and unites us. American music celebrates who we were, who we are, and who we want to be. It gives a voice to everyone. When the Greenwood Community Band performs our concert, we want you to feel nostalgic for the memories and excited for our country, as we negotiate the present and look to the future with hopeful hearts, together.” Noworyta said.
