There are a wealth of artistic events coming up, including individual artist talks and the 57th Annual Penrod Arts Fair. Here are some great opportunities to admire and maybe even purchase some fine art, with a special nod to members of marginalized communities.
Shinique Smith: Torque
Sculptor and abstract painter Shinique Smith has a newly commissioned installation in the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion at Newfields (4000 N. Michigan Road), on display now through next June during the museum’s regular business hours. The multimedia piece brings together textiles, found objects, and an aural nod to the world of motorsports. The exhibit is free for members and included in the cost of general admission for non-members.
Creatives on Creatives: Dija Henry and Yoonji Jung
Creatives on Creatives is part of the Creatives in Color series, sponsored by the Indianapolis chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). The interview-style format will feature Dija Henry, an actress, educator, and founder of Blue House Entertainment LLC, and Yoonji Jung, founder and lead designer of Good Creatives, discussing their individual careers. The event will be on August 28 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the draft coworking space (1525 Prospect Street). Tickets are $5 for AIGA members and $10 for non-members.
Penrod Arts Fair
Billed as “Indiana's Nicest Day,” Penrod is a long-standing tradition in the arts community and will be from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on September 7. The daylong event is a great way to see work from hundreds of artisans, including ceramicists, jewelry makers, and illustrators. The grounds of Newfields will also be home to six entertainment stages, booths from more than 50 arts-related nonprofits, and the Indiana Craft Beer Garden. Visit the Penrod website for a full list of artists who will be at the fair and to purchase tickets.
Quest for the West
Now in its nineteenth year, Quest for the West is an annual art show and sale at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art (500 W. Washington Street). Featured works include traditional and contemporary Western art. The sale will be on September 6 and 7 at the museum. The exhibit will be on display from September 8 to October 7. Visit the Eiteljorg website to see the schedule for Quest-related events, to register, and to see a list of artists in this year’s show.
