Indy Reads

This vibrant Fountain Square bookstore offers a wide range of books and over 150 community events annually.

Indianapolis Bookstores

Indy is seeing a large resurgence of independent bookstores, with five opening since April 2023. From bookstore coffee shops to places giving a voice to banned books nationwide, Indy is becoming a literacy hotspot. Check out some of our highlights below.

Indy’s newest general interest bookstore, nestled in the historic Lockerbie Neighborhood, home to the James Whitcomb Riley (an American author and poet) Museum.

Golden Hour Books devotes 100 percent of its space to new books, including Kate Chopin classics, small press children’s titles, and books for aspiring (and current) artists. This eclectic “bookstore for continuing education” also offers various workshops and book clubs.

This general interest bookstore focuses on human-centric stories and global voices. Located on Mass Ave. in the Bottleworks District, this store hosted 17 local authors and more than 60 events last year. Guests are greeted by a resident cat, Sweet Potato.

This combination of a used bookstore/coffee shop is a hotspot for meetups and study sessions. Visitors can browse books by LGBTQ+ and Black authors, titles from small presses, and books about photography and art.

Indy’s queer, Black, and woman-owned bookstore focused on celebrating banned books and work by marginalized writers.

Indy Reads provides adult learners and their families with literacy, English language, and job readiness programs, while also operating a community bookstore in Fountain Square that hosts over 150 community events annually.
