Celebrating its 91st anniversary, Hinkle Fieldhouse has been home to the Butler Bulldogs since 1928. A National Historic Landmark since 1987, the fieldhouse is the only arena in the nation so recognized for its contribution to the game of basketball. Originally named Butler Fieldhouse, the name was changed in 1966 to honor the legendary Coach Paul “Tony” Hinkle who is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Not only is the Fieldhouse home to several Butler sports, over its 91 years it has served as a gathering place for a variety of events including six presidential visits, barracks and training for the military during WWII, the Butler Indoor relays, circuses, 6-day bicycle races, professional basketball, and the Indiana High School boys’ basketball state championships for over 40 years. The iconic movie Hoosiers filmed its final scenes at the Fieldhouse, just as the state championship game the movie portrays was played there in 1954. Hinkle Fieldhouse is listed among the best places to watch a college basketball game as well as a “bucket list” visit for basketball fans of all ages.
