Indianapolis’s favorite holiday tradition, Winterlights, returns to Newfields for the fourth year. Experience the magic of more than half a million glittering lights throughout the historic garden at Newfields. This outdoor celebration is the perfect opportunity to gather with family and friends for an outdoor and socially-distanced activity everyone can enjoy.
“This year more than ever we all need places to be with our loved ones and friends,” said Jonathan Wright, the Ruth Lilly Deputy Director of Horticulture and Natural Resources at Newfields. “I am so proud of our team that has worked to make Winterlights possible this year under trying circumstances, and to create new elements to brighten the season! We have always managed crowds to ensure the best experience for our guests and are thus well positioned to maintain the magic while ensuring everyone’s safety.”
Old favorites return, including the Landscape of Light dancing to the Nutcracker Suite in front of the historic Lilly House. However, this year local band Huckleberry Funk recorded a special version of the much-loved song This Christmas by Donny Hathaway that alternates with the Nutcracker throughout the evening. This combination of classical and pop is sure to bring a smile to everyone, young and old.
Guests can expect to see big changes as the Whimsical Terrace that part of the experience is entirely reimagined. The colors in this playful zone change with vibrant tones inspired by Karl Unnasch’s monumental, toy-covered tree, Playtime in Indy (2015). The wooded backdrop along the main path is a tapestry of holiday color, inspired by the Northern Lights (aurora borealis). A majestic ash tree comes to life with the magic of moving, robotic lights—making the tree move and sway in color.
Savory snacks, including grilled cheese, an exclusive blend of Just Pop In popcorn and sweet giant cookies, are available for purchase served alongside Newfield’s hot cocoa, apple cider (with the option to add West Fork Whiskey) and Sun King Brewery’s Electric Reindeer beer. Holiday shoppers can find locally-made gifts at the Wintermarket, along with unique ornaments for everyone on their lists.
Tickets are available in 30-minute intervals. Sunset Tickets at 5 and 5:30 pm are a perfect option for families looking to enjoy the sunset dip behind Lilly House, late night tickets are a perfect nightcap to date night. Advanced tickets are required for all guests and members as are masks to accommodate health safety measures.
