Race fans will return to Indianapolis for the 106th running of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” though the race isn’t the only spectacle on display.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be at full capacity for the first time since 2019 and will welcome more than 300,000 spectators. To celebrate the revival, the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway have collaborated once again to “Welcome Race Fans” with artwork from gifted Indy locals. The recurring theme for this year’s artwork is “Back Home Again,” which displays traditions and excitement from both the Indy 500 and Indiana in its entirety. All artworks were printed into a limited number of free posters that are available while supplies last.
As always, the artworks will be displayed throughout Indianapolis. Reproductions can be found at iconic destinations such as the Indianapolis International Airport and Monument Circle. Race fans are encouraged to be on the lookout and share their favorite pieces from “Welcome Race Fans” on their social media while using the hashtags #WelcomeRaceFans, #ThisIsMay, and #Indy500.
To celebrate the 100th Running of the Indy 500 in 2016, the Arts Council of Indianapolis developed their first installment of “Welcome Race Fans,” which celebrated Indianapolis Racing history. From dyeing vintage flags to arranging collages, the artworks are an important addition to traditions of the Indy 500 and the celebration (and return) of its fans.
“Welcome Race Fans” 2022 commissioned the following five artists for their work: H. Herin, Ode to Alice Greene; JD Bills, The Greatest Spectacle in Racing; Lucie Rice, Back Home Again; Mary Mindiola, An Indy Home Tradition; Mirvia Sol Eckert, Innovation in Bloom.
