Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is located in west-central Indiana just 90 minutes west of Indianapolis (off I-70 midway from St. Louis). Home to the Sisters of Providence and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, “The Woods” is a special place full of sacred history, majestic buildings, and peaceful tree-lined streets.
Offering tours, pilgrimages, programs, retreats, dining, shopping, and more, the Sisters of Providence welcome people of all faith traditions to learn the story of Indiana’s first Saint, Mother Theodore Guerin.
Arriving from France in 1840, Mother Theodore opened the nation’s first Catholic academy for girls at a time when women were not seen as equals and anti-Catholic sentiments were strong. Inspired by her unwavering faith in Providence, nearly 5,000 women over the years joined the congregation with sisters eventually teaching in more than 200 schools across the United States, South America, and Asia. Today's sisters continue to create positive change in the world with ministries on education, spirituality, justice, advocating for women, and comforting those in need.
Spend time at beautiful Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and leave feeling refreshed and renewed. Travel at your own pace or take a guided tour of indoor and outdoor shrines, churches, and chapels. You are welcome to join the sisters for Mass, stay for lunch, and meet the alpacas at the White Violet Center. Take home a keepsake of your visit from Linden Leaf Gifts where you will find exclusive hand-crafted items made by the sisters, knitted alpaca items, fair trade products, and a huge selection of unique gifts and cards.
Self-guided tours are available 9 am-5 pm daily. Guided tours and group visits are scheduled in advance. No admission fee. Suggested donations of $5-$20 per person help the sisters maintain their shrines and grounds. All inside spaces are handicap accessible. Outside spaces may be walked or with transportation. (We can use your motorcoach bus, our 28 passenger tour bus with handicap lift, or our 8 passenger golf cart.) Parking is free and bus friendly. Mass is held Monday-Saturday at 11:30 am and Sunday at 11 am. Student field trips, church groups, company outings, travel clubs, and ALL FAITH TRADITIONS are welcome.
