Bigger Picture ShowI LOVE movies. I also LOVE movie posters. There is a thrill to walking in a theatre and seeing posters for the upcoming blockbusters. The art speaks volumes to the content and emotional experience of a film. I like a good trailer as much as the next guy, but a great poster design always catches my heart and makes me excited about a movie.

The Indy Film Fest annually celebrates the art of poster design at the Bigger Picture Show. This event/fundraiser/party is a showcase of local graphic designers and should be a must see for any music or art lover.

Here is how it works:

  • Designers reimagine classic movie poster designers which are then framed and displayed.
  • Attendees have the option of bidding on their favorite designs with hopes of scoring a one-of-a-kind piece of art that pays homage to a film they love.
  • Everyone drinks, eats, and talks movies in a festive atmosphere.

This year should be particularly interesting. The theme is “Mix-Up” which means designer are taking two classic movies and mashing them up in one unique design. As a participating designer, I had to go through a list and choose a selection. I was absolutely cracking up going through the list and imagining the possibilities.

Here are but a few examples:

  • Kill Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (Kill Bill + Bill  Ted’s Excellent Adventure)
  • The Empire Strikes Back to the Future (The Empire Strikes Back + Back to the Future)
  • There’s Something About Mary Poppins (There’s Something About Mary + Mary Poppins)
  • The Princess Bride of Frankenstein (The Princess Bride + Bride of Frankenstein)
  • The Lost Boyz in the Hood (The Lost Boys + Boyz in the Hood)

It is going to get weird in the best possible way and you don’t want to miss out. Join me this Friday, April 12, at 6:30 pm at the Circle City Industrial Complex. Admission is free, so you have no excuse.
