Who is Gary?

CEO of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Q. Any plays, shows, concerts, etc., you're looking forward to this spring and summer?

A. No matter how many times I hear it, having a chance to experience Beethoven's Ninth Symphony live is always overwhelming.  And the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) performs it the weekend of June 12.  Plus, we are bringing back our popular "Lunch Break" series of 45-minute concerts at Hilbert Circle Theatre in June and July.  You can bring your lunch into the theatre, and tickets are only $5 - there is no better way to experience the power of a live orchestra!

Q. What's your favorite summer activity in Indianapolis?

A. Of course it is attending ISO concerts at Marsh Symphony on the Prairie. The variety of music really offers something for everyone, and you simply can't beat being out under the stars hearing great music.

Q. Any tips for Symphony on the Prairie first timers?

A. Come early -- our gates open at 6 pm for most shows, and the earlier you arrive, the easier it is to park and stake out your space on the lawn. Plus, don't forget that anything goes as far as dress and food -- be creative!  I've seen people dressed to the nines with tablecloths and candelabras. Finally -- don't rush off after the performance ends. Enjoy a nightcap and you'll have an easier time exiting the parking lots.

Q. Besides the ISO, what are your favorite arts destinations in town?

A. We love the Indiana Repertory Theatre, and the collection at the Eiteljorg is absolutely terrific. My kids love the Children's Museum, we are members there and visit regularly.

Q. What's Indy's best-kept secret?

A. I'm amazed at how many people have yet to discover Graeter's ice cream on 56th and Illinois. Best ice cream ever!

Q. Where do you take family members?

A. My family loves paddle boating on the canals, exploring Holliday Park and Eagle Creek Park.

Q. Where do you take friends when they're visiting?

A. We love that there are so many different neighborhoods to explore -- from downtown to  Mass Ave to Broad Ripple to Fountain, we always enjoy taking people to see the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Q. What's your favorite Indy hangout?

A. I spend a lot of time at Café Patachou on 49th and Penn.  It is the ideal place to run into so many people from around the city, plus you shouldn't miss their Cuban Breakfast.

Q. What should visitors to Indy absolutely not miss?

A. You have to climb to the top of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Monument Circle, it is the best way to really see the entire city before your eyes.
