Indianapolis might not seem like a vegetarian or vegan foodie destination, but I’m here to prove you wrong. You may even be surprised how most of Indy’s favorite restaurants make it easier than ever to eat less meat. Whether you’re doing meatless Mondays or have been a die-hard vegan for decades, these are some of my favorite veggie options in the city that go beyond a salad.

Classics

If you’re looking for some of the best plant-based menus in the city, head to Broad Ripple Brewpub, Three Carrots or Ezra’s Enlightened Cafe first. They all have entire menus that are vegetarian or fully plant-based and everything I’ve tried is phenomenal. Don’t just take my word for it though, even my omnivore friends love these spots.

Avocado Toast

I’d be remiss if I didn’t highlight every vegetarian’s main food group – avocado toast. If I’m being honest, there are few times I wouldn’t shell out big bucks for anything including avocado, but Northside Kitchenette’s avocado toast is worth every penny. They don’t hold back on the toppings and the green goddess dressing is *chef’s kiss*.

Sushi

Is sushi really sushi without fish? Answer - yes. Blue Sushi has entered the chat and their vegan sushi is truly next level with 30 different vegan appetizers and rolls. My favorite vegan rolls are the Cowgirl, Green Goddess and the Shiitake to Me, and the brussels sprouts are to-die-for.

Pizza

There’s more to good vegetarian pizza than just good cheese. Most of King Dough's menu is vegetarian friendly and incredibly good. They even have two fully plant-based options that include vegan cheese that is just as good as the real thing.

Dessert

Popsicles aren’t just for kids anymore. At Nicey Treat, they take classic popsicles and elevate them with all-natural, locally sourced ingredients. And with the added bonus of only vegetarian or vegan ingredients, everything is fair game.

Tacos

I have limited self-control when tacos are involved, and thanks to Tlaolli’s solid veg menu, I don’t have to. With three unique vegan-friendly tacos and an array of other meat-alternative entrees, there are plenty of choices for carnivores and vegetarians alike. Don’t forget to round out your meal with their homemade chips and salsa.

Burger

There is an art to creating a good plant-based burger and 317 Burger and Bru Burger have all perfected it. With options to replace all of their extensive burger options with an Impossible patty or house-made veggie burger, there is truly something for everyone.
