The hustle and bustle of April in Indy is in full swing. Spring has sprung, local restaurants and attractions are opening their doors and patios, and Spring Break travelers are making their way into the city.
While we celebrate the vibrant happenings this week, the city is also deeply reflective on our past and the community that makes it whole. That is why the Kennedy King Memorial Initiative is hosting a Day of Reflection this April 4. Today marks the 54th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the day that Robert F. Kennedy showed courage and compassion upon hearing the news while here in Indianapolis.
Learning of Dr. King’s assassination just minutes before he was set to give a campaign speech at what is now Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and Landmark for Peace Memorial, Kennedy quickly re-wrote his remarks to focus on the legacy of Dr. King. The impromptu address on equality, justice, and peace would become one of the most powerful speeches of the late 1960s and inspire the mission of the Kennedy King Memorial Initiative.
Today, the Kennedy King Memorial Initiative invites Indy visitors and residents to commemorate the legacy of Dr. King at the Landmark for Peace Memorial. A wreath will be laid to honor the lives of Dr. King at the sculpture depicting both Kennedy and Dr. King.
